Thorgy Thor & The Thorchestra: Pre-concert VIP Experience
NYC-based drag performance artist and professional strings musician Thorgy Thor is bringing her Thorchestra with special guests, the Rochester Gay Men’s Chorus, to Kodak Hall at Eastman Theatre. A co-production of the RPO and Trillium Health with financial support from the office of NYS Senator Jeremy A. Cooney, this unique program puts the spotlight on the symphonic talents and drag-performance of Thorgy Thor.
Thorgy is classically trained in string performance (violin, viola, and cello). She shot to international fame after appearing on season 8 of RuPaul’s Drag Race (2016) and season 3 of RuPaul’s Drag Race All Stars (2018). Since then, she has been bringing her trademark wit, sense of humor, and musical charm to stages all around the world. Thorgy has performed to acclaim with orchestras including the Boston, Cincinnati, Pittsburgh, San Francisco, Charlotte, Seattle, and Oregon Symphonies.

Experience the beloved family film classic like never before with the full score performed live by your Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Scott Terrell. When a cyclone rips through Kansas, Dorothy (Judy Garland) and her dog Toto are whisked away to the magical Land of Oz. As they follow the yellow brick road toward the Emerald City to meet the Wizard, they meet Scarecrow, who needs a brain; Tin Woodsman, missing a heart; and a Cowardly Lion who wants courage. To earn the Wizard’s help, the group must return with the broomstick of the Wicked Witch of the West.

It’s always an extra-special evening when the RPO’s beloved concertmaster, Juliana Athayde, performs as soloist. Hear her virtuosity in Prokofiev’s tender Second Violin Concerto. Also, diabolic dances from Lowell Liebermann’s ballet Frankenstein. Plus, two works for children of all ages: Benjamin Britten introduced generations of listeners to classical music with his Young Person’s Guide to the Orchestra, spotlighting each section before bringing them together in a shimmering climax. And Thomas Warfield, RIT’s Director of Dance, enchants with his telling of Peter & the Wolf.
